Upstream - Upstream is the exploration and production (E&P) which involves the search for underwater and underground crude oil and natural gas fields by the drilling of exploration wells and into established operating wells to recover existing oil and gas.
Midstream - Midstream refers to the transportation, storage, and processing of oil and gas. Following the discovery and recovery of resources, it is transported to a refinery, which in most cases is located long distances and possibly in a completely different geographic region. Transportation can include anything from tanker ships to pipelines and trucking fleets.
Downstream - Downstream includes the processing of the raw materials acquired during the upstream phase. The marketing and distribution of these products to consumers and end users in a number of forms including gasoline, natural gas, diesel oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), lubricants, kerosene, jet fuel, asphalt, heating oil, as well as numerous other petrochemical products.
